about

Written and recorded at 5am during a 2017 sunrise on my rooftop in Chicago. This track will appear on my debut record 'Phased', which arrives 1.4.19 on color vinyl, CD, & all streaming platforms.

'Phased' began with an idea to live-score the the 2017 solar eclipse. The concept quickly turned into a full record about the sun.

"Sunrise (Solar Wind at Dawn)" is the most relaxed track on the record. Gradual, slow-building, vibrant layers of acoustic guitar are accompanied by a Roland TR-707 drum machine and bass. Minimal and spacey with lush reverb and delay, the track represents the calmness that exists alongside disruption and panic of daily life— a major theme of the record.

When I got up to the rooftop shortly before 5am, it was pitch black with the moon glowing brightly. I set up my recording rig and waited for the sun to break the stale darkness. As the sun slowly began to create a warm, orange glow, I started messing around with different notes and chords. I then found myself repeating this slow arpeggio progression on my guitar with heavy use of my reverb pedal, and immediately this felt like the intro. From there the track quickly took form and began to flow.

Shortwave Chicago, Illinois

Shortwave is an instrumental project by classically trained multi-instrumentalist Dave Zagar. Experimental and atmospheric, yet rhythmic and punchy, his debut record 'Phased' (out 1.4.19) nods to 70s psychedelia, krautrock, and modern classical works. The album was written and recorded on his apartment rooftop in Chicago. ... more
