about

My brother Andy and I set out to capture a partially frozen Lake Michigan at Muskegon State Park last year, four miles from the house where we grew up. I sampled sounds of the ice, moving water, and crisp air, later blending them with music I wrote to accompany the drone footage Andy recorded.

This project was extra special to me—I moved from Chicago to California just a few months after visiting Lake Michigan that day, and would no longer readily be able to experience its unique allure, the falling winter snow, or the ice forming over the water. I began work on the music before heading out West, but ironically, it didn’t properly take shape until I was already in California, the furthest away from Lake Michigan I could be. Finishing this song conjured the particular serenity I felt on the day we filmed. Michigan is gorgeous in the winter, and “Frozen Waves” is an homage to that special beauty and our beloved hometown.

Shortwave Chicago, Illinois

Shortwave is an instrumental project by classically trained multi-instrumentalist Dave Zagar. The album was written and recorded on his apartment rooftop in Chicago. ... more
